Hard Wax vs Soft Wax: What’s the Difference & Which Should You Use?
If you’re new to waxing, one of the first things you’ll need to get to grips with is the difference between hard wax and soft wax.
While both are designed to remove unwanted hair from the root, they’re applied and removed differently and are better suited to different areas of the body. Choosing the right wax can make a big difference to your treatment results, client comfort and overall waxing experience.
At Pinkfishes, our professional waxing range includes both hard hot film wax and soft strip wax, so we’re breaking down the differences and when you might reach for each one.

What is Hard Wax?
Hard wax — also known as hot wax — is applied directly onto the skin using a waxing spatula. Unlike soft wax, it doesn’t require a waxing strip for removal.
Once applied, the wax is left for a short period to set while remaining flexible. The edge can then be lifted and the wax itself is removed from the skin.
Hard wax is particularly useful for more sensitive areas, making it a popular choice for:
Bikini and intimate waxing
Underarms
Facial waxing
Inner thighs
Pinkfishes Siren Hard Wax is our fuchsia hot film wax, formulated with elastic polymers to create a flexible layer that helps reduce cracking during removal.

Why choose Hard Wax?
One of the biggest benefits of hard wax is the level of control it gives the wax technician. Because you don’t need to apply a separate strip, you can create patches in different shapes and sizes depending on the area you’re working on.
Its flexibility also makes it a great option for areas with coarser hair, making it less likely to snap or break during removal. As the wax doesn’t adhere to the topmost layer of skin, it can also be reapplied to the same area more than once, ensuring that every hair is removed. This makes the removal of the wax much more comfortable for the client, so great for use where client comfort is particularly important.
What is Soft Wax?
Soft wax — often called strip wax — remains tacky after application and is removed using a waxing strip.
It should be applied in a very thin layer, making it an efficient option when covering larger areas of the body.
Soft wax is commonly used for:
Legs
Arms
Brows
Upper lip
At Pinkfishes, we have two professional soft strip waxes: Lagoon Soft Wax, our turquoise iridescent gelee wax, and Shell Soft Wax, our pink iridescent gelee wax.
Both feature a jelly-like gelee texture designed for ultra-thin application and efficient hair removal, and both are rosin/colophonium free.

Hard Wax vs Soft Wax: What’s the Main Difference?
The easiest way to remember the difference is:
Hard wax = no strip required.
Soft wax = removed using a strip.
But there’s a little more to it than that.

Which Wax Should You Use?
There isn’t necessarily one wax that’s better than the other. A professional wax technician will usually have both hard and soft wax available, choosing the most suitable option depending on the treatment area, hair and client.
For example, if you’re completing a full-body waxing appointment, you might use soft wax across the legs where you need to work efficiently over a larger surface area, before switching to hard wax for the underarms or bikini area.
Knowing when and how to use each wax is an important part of delivering professional waxing treatments.

Don't Forget Your Waxing Prep & Aftercare
Your choice of wax is only one part of the treatment. Preparing the skin correctly and using appropriate aftercare can help you achieve the best possible results for your clients.
The Pinkfishes professional waxing collection includes:
Pre-Waxing Cleansing Spray to prepare the treatment area.
Pre & After Wax Oil for use before Hard wax for easy removal, or to hydrate the skin and remove stickiness after the treatment.
After Wax Lotion to hydrate the skin after the treatment, perfect for those clients that don’t want oil applied to that area (face etc).
Waxing Spatulas & Facial Spatulas for smooth application.
Professional Waxing Strips for efficient removal of soft wax.
And remember: never double dip your waxing spatula. Once a spatula has touched your client’s skin, it should not go back into the wax pot — even if you flip it over and use the other end.
