Top Tips for Beginners from Pinkfishes Brand Ambassadors

Top Tips for Beginners from Pinkfishes Brand Ambassadors

Are you a budding lash technician eager to make your mark in the beauty industry? Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your skills, embarking on the journey of becoming a lash tech can be both exciting and challenging. To help you navigate this path successfully, we have pulled together some valuable tips from our Brand Ambassadors. Pinkfishes Brand Ambassadors are a mixture between newer lash techs and lash techs who have been lashing for years! They work closely with us to help build and grow the Pinkfishes Brand, by using and promoting our products through their own channels. They are also the first people to try out Pinkfishes newest products, and review them. We have asked them to give us their top tips and advice for those starting out in the industry:

1. Research Popular Curls and Sizes

When stocking up on lash supplies, it's essential to research which curls and sizes are most popular among clients. Avoid over-ordering by understanding the demand in your area. Starting with a curated selection of high-demand products will prevent unnecessary expenses and ensure you have the essentials to meet your clients' needs. A great way to ensure you are ordering the correct lashes is to have a consultation with your clients prior to their first appointment to see what style they want as well as what lashes would suit their eye shapes. C & D curl tend to be the majority of our brand ambassadors favourites and most popular curls with clients but this will vary. In terms of lengths a good tip to follow is start by purchasing mixed boxes to allow you to have a good variety without breaking the bank and then when you know what lengths are popular amongst your clients buy these in individual lengths to become more cost effective. Popular lengths are usually 10-13mm but again this will depend on your clientele.

2. Master Classic Lashes First

Before delving into advanced techniques like Russian volume lashes, focus on mastering classic lash extensions. Building a strong foundation in classic lash application will enhance your skills and confidence, setting you up for success when you eventually venture into more intricate lash maps. Classic lash application really is all about isolation and placement which are fundamental skills you will need to master in order to complete any eyelash extension treatment. Brand Ambassadors recommend finding yourself a perfect isolating tweezer and Pinkfishes Elite Straight Tweezers is designed for this. Our elite tweezers also come with a 6 month warranty where you can receive up to 2 free replacements in case you drop them by accident!

3. Experiment with Fan-Making Techniques

If you're struggling with creating lash fans, don't get discouraged. There are many different fan-making techniques including: the 'lift and tap' method, the 'lift and roll' method, and the 'wiggle' method. Different methods work better for some people than others, so make sure that you try all of them out to find what comes most naturally and works best for you. Refining your fan-making skills is crucial for achieving flawless lash sets. Practise makes perfect, so you can always try making fans and placing them on sponges/mannequins. There are also helpful tools such as flower glue rings with have grooves in the edges to help you make your fans.

4. Quality Over Speed

While efficiency is important, prioritise quality over speed. Concentrate on delivering impeccable lash sets rather than rushing through appointments. Clients appreciate meticulous attention to detail, and consistently high-quality work will earn you loyal customers who value the excellence of your services. Even some of the best lash technicians take several hours to complete a full set after years of practise. Make sure you schedule enough time per appointment to ensure that you do not feel rushed and can complete a full set to the best of your ability.
Each person will have different natural lashes and you will need to use different techniques for each client. For example, if your client has monolid eyes, they may have some natural lashes that are not as easy to get to. So for these clients you may need to use a tape to pull up the eyelid to get to the natural lashes in order to apply the lash extension to them. A really good product that you can use to do this is our silicone gel tape, this is because it doesn't require de-tacking before use, and it's gel material creates a cooling feeling for your clients, alternatively our eyelid tape is also a great tool to manipulate the clients eyelid.  Another thing that you need to bare in mind for different clients is priming their natural lashes. With some clients, there are many benefits from priming their lashes, this is because it removes any oils and dirt before lash application, aiding retention. Pinkfishes Pink Creation Primer is great for this, however, primer should not be used on all clients, for example clients with dehydrated lashes. We would always recommend having a consultation with new clients before appointments so that you can prepare the products that you will need.

5. Consistent Advertising

Promote your lash services consistently to attract new clients and maintain a steady flow of appointments. Utilise social media platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok to showcase your work - regularly uploading photos and reels. This will help potential clients gain trust and encourage them to book in with you. Engage with your audience, and remind followers about your availability. Even a simple daily post on your story can help keep your services top-of-mind for potential clients. Another good tool to encourage new clients to book in with you is by advertising sales and deals on your social media. For example, you could offer 10% OFF for new clients, or seasonal deals around events such as 'Black Friday'. Just keep in mind that you don't want to under value your services by discounting too often and showing too much availability may also be off putting for potential clients so try to advertise 'Limited' availability instead.

A free tool that you can use to promote your company is Google My Business. You can create a business profile with all of your information (contact number, website, location, etc.) and ask customers to review your services so they appear publicly. This will make your business easily searchable to new potential clients and will make them feel more comfortable booking in.

6. Embrace Constructive Feedback

Welcome feedback from mentors, peers, and clients as valuable opportunities for growth. Constructive criticism can offer insights into areas for improvement and help you refine your techniques. Embrace feedback as a catalyst for progress rather than letting it deter your confidence. If you are already a qualified lash tech, you can book in for a 1-1 mentoring session with one of the Pinkfishes Trainers. In these sessions you can go through anything you are struggling with or anything in particular that you would like to learn. Additionally, if you have booked in with us for a course (Classic, Russian, or Combined) in the last 3 months, you can book in for a mentoring session with us for free!

7. Invest in Ongoing Education

Continuously invest in expanding your knowledge and skills as a lash technician. Attend workshops, seminars, and online courses to stay updated on the latest
trends, techniques, and industry best practices. The more you invest in your education, the more proficient and versatile you'll become in your craft. Pinkfishes also offer e-learning video sessions which you can use for tips, tricks.

8. Prioritise Quality Products

Resist the temptation to cut corners by purchasing budget lash products. Always invest in high-quality, professional-grade tools and products from reputable suppliers. A great tip from our ambassadors is to ensure that you check the reviews of the brand and products before purchasing from them. For example, Pinkfishes have over 700 5* reviews across Google Reviews and Reviews.io from verified customers. Additionally good suppliers should be able to provide Material Safety Data Sheets for their liquids, you can view Pinkfishes MSDS sheets which includes information such as ingredients, potential hazards, etc. Superior quality products not only yield better results but also contribute to the retention and safety of your clients' lash extensions.

9. Value Your Time and Expertise

Respect the value of your time and expertise by setting clear boundaries and policies. When clients arrive with minimal lashes left for an infill, consider charging them for a full set to compensate for the additional time and effort required. Establishing fair and transparent pricing practices reinforces the worth of your services and ensures mutual respect between you and your clients.

10. Invest in an Online Booking System

Leading on from this, another beneficial tool for lash techs is an online booking system. This can save you time which you can then spend lashing and earning money instead and this not only looks more official, but is much easier for customers to use as they can see the price, length of appointment and your availability instantly, without having to contact you and wait for a response. Some recommended platforms from our ambassadors for this are Goldie and Timely.

Embarking on a career as a lash technician requires dedication, patience, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. By following these tips and staying true to your passion for lash artistry, you'll be well-equipped to thrive in the competitive beauty industry and establish your brand.
