How to look after your lash extensions

Lash extensions are a collaborative effort between your lash technician and you as the client. While your technician is responsible for creating a beautiful, well-applied set, how long your lashes last can ultimately depend on how well they are cared for afterwards. Proper aftercare plays a crucial role in maintaining both the appearance and longevity of your extensions.

Without the right care, even the best application can result in poor retention, premature shedding, and a less polished finish. By following simple aftercare steps and using the correct products, you can protect your investment, keep your lashes looking fuller for longer, and maintain the health of your natural lashes in between appointments. So if you want to know what you can be doing to look after your lash extensions you are in the right place!

Washing your lashes

There is a common misconception that getting lash extensions wet at all can be harmful and reduce retention, when in fact, the opposite is often true. We recommend cleansing your lashes daily, or at least every other day, using a lash shampoo and water.

Without regular washing, oils, dirt, and makeup residue build up along the lash line, weakening the adhesive bond and causing extensions to shed prematurely. This build-up can also leave lashes looking clumpy and less defined, particularly with volume sets. More importantly, an unclean lash line can harbour bacteria, increasing the risk of irritation or conditions such as Blepharitis. In some cases, poor hygiene may even encourage an overgrowth of Demodex mites, which thrive in oily, unclean environments. Maintaining a consistent cleansing routine is therefore essential not only for keeping your lashes looking their best, but also for supporting overall lash and eye health.

Brushing your lashes

Brushing your lash extensions is an essential part of maintaining their appearance and longevity. Throughout the day, lashes can become tangled, twisted, or misaligned—especially after sleeping, showering, or general daily activities. Gently brushing them with a clean spoolie helps to keep the extensions neat, separated, and fluffy, ensuring your set looks full and well-groomed. Regular brushing also prevents lashes from crossing over one another, which can create an uneven or messy appearance. In some cases, it can even help avoid unnecessary strain on the natural lashes caused by tangling. For best results, lashes should be brushed lightly once or twice a day, ideally when they are clean and dry.

Regular Infills for Lash Extensions

As your natural lashes grow, the extensions attached to them move further away from the lash line. These outgrown extensions can become unbalanced, placing strain on the natural lash and potentially causing twisting or premature shedding. During an infill appointment, your lash technician will remove these outgrown extensions and replace any lost lashes, restoring the overall shape and fullness of the set. This not only keeps your lashes looking fresh and even but also helps to protect the health of your natural lashes by preventing unnecessary weight or tension. Regular infills allow your extensions to be maintained safely and consistently, without the need for a full removal and new set each time. Many lash technicians will recommend getting infills every 2-3 weeks but this can vary.

What to avoid on or near your lash extensions

To maintain the longevity and appearance of your lash extensions, it’s important to be mindful of the products you use and your daily habits. Certain items can weaken the adhesive bond or cause unnecessary stress to both the extensions and your natural lashes so here are a few items and products we would recommend to avoid using whilst you have lash extensions on;

Mascara

Mascara is generally not recommended when wearing lash extensions, as it can interfere with both their appearance and longevity. Many mascaras are difficult to remove and can lead to product build-up along the lash line. This often results in excessive rubbing during cleansing, which can weaken the adhesive bond and cause premature shedding of the extensions. In addition, mascara can cause lashes to clump together, taking away from the clean, fluffy finish especially for Volume/Russian lash extensions

Eyelash Curlers

Eyelash curlers should be avoided when wearing lash extensions, as they can cause significant damage to both the extensions and your natural lashes. The pressure applied by curlers can crimp or bend the extensions, ruining their shape and leading to an uneven, unnatural appearance. This force can also weaken the adhesive bond, resulting in premature shedding. Lash extensions are already designed with a curl to enhance the eyes, so additional curling is unnecessary and can compromise the overall look and longevity of your set. If you are unhappy with the curl to your lash extensions speak to your lash technician as they may be able to get a curlier lash extension for your next set such as D or U Curl.

Cotton Pads

Be cautious when using cotton pads to remove eye makeup whilst wearing lash extensions, as the fibres can easily catch or become trapped within the lashes. This can lead to tangling, discomfort, and even premature shedding if the extensions are pulled.

 Extreme Heat

Exposure to intense heat or steam repetitively, such as in saunas, sunbeds, opening ovens, hairdryers etc. can affect the durability of lash extension sets over time. Sweat can cause a build up of oils on the lash line, breaking down the bond of the glue and causing the extensions to fall from the natural lash before their time. Lash extensions are also typically made from synthetic fibres, so they are sensitive to high temperatures and can become crisp, shrivelled, or misshapen if exposed to direct heat.

Pulling/Picking Lash Extensions

Pulling or picking at your lash extensions should be avoided at all costs, as it can cause significant damage to both the extensions and your natural lashes. This habit can lead to premature shedding, leaving your lash line looking sparse and uneven. More importantly, if an extension is pulled out while still attached to a natural lash, it can remove the natural lash before it has completed its growth cycle. This may result in temporary gaps and can take several weeks for new lashes to grow through.

Sleeping on your Front

This may seem unexpected, but your sleeping position can have an impact on the longevity of your lash extensions. Sleeping on your front or side, or frequently tossing and turning during the night, can create friction against your pillow. This repeated contact can cause extensions to become misaligned or shed prematurely. To minimise the impact of friction on your lash extensions while sleeping, there are a few simple adjustments you can make. Sleeping on your back is the most effective way to protect your lashes, as it prevents direct contact with your pillow. If this isn’t comfortable, switching to a silk or satin pillowcase can help reduce friction and be gentler on your extensions.

Looking after your lash extensions doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does require consistency. From daily cleansing to being mindful of your lifestyle and the products you use, small habits can make a big difference in how long your lashes last and how they look between appointments.

Lash extensions are an investment, and while your technician plays a key role in creating a beautiful set, maintaining them is equally your responsibility. With the right routine in place, you’ll not only maximise retention but also keep your lashes looking fresh, fluffy, and flawless right up until your next infill.
